February 11,2017

Elections in Punjab are over. The election commission had ordered repolling in 48 constituencies out of 117 on Frbruary 9,2017, due to problems with Electronic Voting Machines. Now everyone is waiting for results which are to be declared on March 11,2017, after the elections in UP and other places are over.

All the polls and surveys point out that the people of Punjab have voted for a change. As a result the ruling Akali Dal and BJP are going to lose. It is not clear whether Congress is going to win or the new Aam Admi Party.

Punjabis overwhelmingly have been very vocal about their problems and expressing their hatred for BJP and Akali Dal who have ruined Punjab in their rule of last ten years. Punjabis in vast majority described following problems as their basic problems: Unemployment, Indebtedness of farmers that is leading to suicides, Water, Poisoning of soil leading to increased cancer, corruption, drugs and no rule of law. These problems have brought devastation and destruction to Punjab in last 70 years. For almost 60 years under the rule of the Congress party and for last ten years under rule of Akalis and BJP. While a small coterie has made billions of dollars by the loot and plunder of natural and human resources. For example the ruling Badal family had only 7 buses, ten years ago, now they have 700 buses. They have run into ground the state transport, so that only their buses can run on the roads. It is said that 75 percent youth is addicted to drugs and the drug trade is controlled by the finance minister, Majithia. Many industries have closed because the Badals want a share in every business that is established in the state. Thousands of farmers have committed suicide because their crops do not bring them enough money to live and pay their loans to money lenders and banks.Close to 80 percent of ground water has gone, the water from rivers is taken outside Punjab and corruption is rampant. A young man who lives in Australia narrated that he had to pay 80,000 rupees to local MLA to get his birth certificate. Village after village people pointed out that if anyone stands in Panchayat elections, the ruling Akali BJP combine gets them picked up by police on trumped up charges. So vast majority of people wanted change. So many times one heard," Anybody else, no Akalis no BJP".

Unfortunately while the Punjabis overwhelmingly want change and solutions to these problems, none of the political parties are serious or interested in solving these problems. If Congress wins , it will be more of the same, continuation of status quo. Congress is not an unknown entity. It has ruled Punjab for closed to 60 years. It has no solutions to any of the problems. In fact it has followed policies that have created and aggravated these problems.

If Aam Admi Party wins, it has no clue how to solve any of these problems in spite of its tall promises. For example no party, state or business can solve the problem of unemployment and livelihood. They are not capable or competent to solve this problem. Businesses are only interested in maximizing profits and not solve the problem of unemployment . The state and government can temporarily provide employment, like Roosevelt did during depression, but it does not solve the problem, nor does any of these parties have the political will to do it.As we see in the US there is vast majority of people that are unemployed or under employed or are working poor. Aam Admi Party and Kejriwal have no clue how to tackle these problems. They want to play the same game. A section of ruling elite thinks that they will do a better job for them than Akalis,BJP,Congress and CPI(M).

Prime minister Modi who tirelessly rants against corruption, shamelessly asked the people of Punjab in several rallies to bring back to power Akali and BJP combine, showing Complete disregard and disconnect for the problems of people, which is the standard operating method of these political parties.

Punjabis resident abroad have contributed greatly to raise awareness for change in Punjab. According to one report, 50 thousand young men and women went to Punjab from different parts of the world to bring Akali BJP combine down. They established call centers in Canada,US.,Britain,Europe,Newzealand,Australia and many other countries and made millions of telephone calls to voters in Punjab. They also used social media very effectively to expose loot and plunder by BJP and Akalis. For a large number of young women and men, this was their first political engagement. This whole activity has made them aware of social reality and problems faced by Punjab, the place of their birth and countries of their residence. All this energy is bound to lead them to draw warranted conclusions and find solutions to problems faced by them. As the old saying goes," The Struggle Continues".
