The Saudi Ministry of Health has made mandatory drug testing a part of ‘medical check-ups’ required for expats before marriage to Saudi women. This rule excludes Saudi citizens.

Musha’al al Rubaian, the spokesman of the ministry, told Al-Hayat newspaper: “The decree issued by Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, includes drug testing to be part of medical check-ups to marry Saudi women and is obligatory solely for expats, not Saudis.”

“According to the Ministry of Justice statistics last year, going by the number of marriage certificates, issued by various courts across the kingdom, of expats marrying Saudi women, there were 3,352 marriages, versus 700 divorce cases,” according to the official.

“Drug addiction is a key contributing factor leading to divorce in the Kingdom,” another source stated.
